This is more than a rumor I mean this was reported by sports business journal which is uh extremely reputable uh their reports of this type of thing this type of development have generally turned out to be accurate they say cited multiple unnamed sources but they’re not the kind of media outlet that just throws around rumors or like if they said it it means it’s definitely in in the discussion phase they didn’t say it’s definitely happening for 22 23but they say it is uh it’s in the discussion phase and that it’s being seriously considered uh I i think both of us are opposed to uniform ads on uh on any part of the uniform the nhl uh of course has taken a number of steps in this direction just within the last four months in december they started having helmet ads which was supposedly a oneyear thing to recoup uh revenue loss during the pandemic then they announced in january I believe that their divisions for this season their division names would have corporate advertised names like the toyota central division or or whatever uh that also supposedly just for one season then in march uh nhl commissioner gary bettman announced that in fact the helmet ads probably weren’t going to be just for one season and that they would be extended for at least one more season uh and now comes the news that there may be ad patches on the jerseys uh so this it definitely seems like the nhl has taken a bunch of steps if you if you sort of chart that timeline in just four months uh from having no corporate presence uh on team branding and league branding and now suddenly it looks like there could be a lot of it what I found most surprising and really sort of upsetting about this is that the nhl has really been the league that has kept its jerseys if not its helmets this season but has kept its jerseys pretty pure while other leagues uh use camouflage jerseys ingame uh have the the pink or the blue promotions for mother’s day father’s day various holiday things green for st patrick’s day all these different things that we’ve seen in the other leagues the nhl restricts all of that to pregame there’s never been i.
